Ethical Design Education

“good design is responsible design ” Susan S.Seneasy. After reading the article. Graphic designers and all designers have a huge influence on society. They have a choice to select which products to promote. Some designers make all their lives to make good design. Some of the designers use the recycled materials to help environment or design ads for environmental awareness campaigns. Some of them designers design things for social responsibility. They do make a big influence on their society. Like “ Design Magazine “ it is a new magazine in Saudi Arabia. On their last issue they used recycled papers for the magazine.

While other designers they just don’t care about the impact of people, they don’t feel guilty about breaking the "ethics of design". They just care about selling their products, and promote their product at any cost.

For example, those who promote companies for energy drinks would do anything, no matter how inhuman it was; to sell their new drink for teenagers. They just don’t care that it has side affect.

In conclusion, I agree with what the author said in the article "good design is responsible design". Each designer is responsible for the message they convey through their design, and they will not have a good design unless they had good message.

Socially Responsible Adertising

Altruism or Exploitation for the author Judih, she has BA and MA also she doses editorial book design. The author mentioned a lot of words about what Altruism and Exploitation, I enjoy reading it, I was agreed on some points but I have different opinion on other. Also I want to learn what is the idea behind it and what is it really about. Social responsible advertising, Cause related marketers it must either to improve the company or to support the company. Cause related marketing has different types. For example, Niche marketing, is marketing to specific marketer in the society. Like Body shop. Also, Passion Branders is to support the causes for long. Like, Benetton. Even Image Builders, They try to work to support causes their image. Like Star bucks. There are many local examples of markers who also causes for their products. Like STC the Saudi telephone company, they proved it’s relevant in Saudi Arabia.

In my opinion, comparing to a causes related company and regular company, I would as a consumer buy from both of them as long as the marketing way was strong. Because I like to buy what I want and what I need and what I know it’s better for me. As a result, I have come to believe that I am as a Graphic Designer if I had an offer in both companies the caused related company and the non-caused related company. I would do for the one that gave me better offer. For me there is no difference between Both company unless I’m having good offer.

Introduction

The list mentioned in the introduction of the book "Citizen Designer" after reading a lot of words about what is good design in good citizenship, I enjoy reading it, when I read the list I was so interested in each question. I was agreed on some points but I have different opinion on other. Also I want to learn what is the idea behind it and what is it really about. After reading the list, I realized the questions if I was the designer and the art director asked me to do what was in the list, at what point of that list I will say NO sorry I can not do that?. Then I stopped at the question, Of designing an ad for product whose frequent use could result in the user’s death. Which I disagree, when a corporation abuses the takedown laws to intimidate design we don't like it, we need to be publicly humiliated and embarrassed. In my opinion, I do not agree because I don’t want the society to get affected of product I designed just for the sake of taking money. I believe that the product, which has a bad result, I would never design it.

As a result, I have come to believe that the term brand design ultimately undermines the job we do as designers. Brand design is not only about design. It is the perfect, meticulously crafted balance of cultural anthropology, psychology, marketing and creativity. It is about cultural anthropology because what we do in our culture—whether it is an obsession with reality television or weapons of mass destruction, this has a major impact on the brands around us. It is about psychology because if we don’t fundamentally understand the brain circuitry of our audience and really know what they are thinking—and why they are thinking it!—we will not be able to solicit their imagination.
